AUSTRALIAN MAIL CONTRACT. (Received 9.59 a.m.) MELBOURNE, this day. Tbe Postmaster-General states that the cabled announcement that Canada was willing to subsidise the AustralianVancouver service via New Zealand had nothing to do with the negotiations with the Union Company for the fortnightly service to take the place of the lapsing Orient contract. He promises to issue a memorandum next week announcing the changes to be made in the poundage system. Tuese were adopted with the departure of the Orient liner Orotava fvom Adelaide yesterday, and that, of the Orontes from London on January 27. Apple shippers' steamers will cnli at Adelaide en route for England till the end of April.
