NEWCASTLE COAL STRIKE.
A Compromise Suggested.
SYDNEY, January 19
A meeting of the Miners' Federation delegates was held at Newcastle to-day. It was decided to ask the coal-owners to meet representatives of the miners and wheelers in open conference as early as possible.
At a mass meeting the wheelers decided to return to work if the reduction in wages is made five instead of the 10 per cent., against which they struck. A meeting of the coal owners is to be held in Sydney to-morrow to discuss the miners' and wheelers' offers, and other matters. The wheelers, when offering to accej>t a reduction of 5 per cent, in their wages, stipulated that the whole matter must come before the Arbitration Court within three weeks. There are twenty-five foreign vessels at Newcastle awaiting supplies of coal. ( Received 9.59 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. The opinion is expressed that unless the men are prepared to resume work on the coal-owners" terms the conference will be unavailing.
