DR. HERZ'S CRITICISMS.

A CRITIC'S EXPLANATION

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. Regarding the extracts taken from letters addressed 'by Dr. Herz, of Christchurch, to the "Berliner Tageblatt, containing some rather outspoken criticism 'of the colony and its people, Dr. Herz, in the course of an interview with the "Press," stated that the articles he wrote numbered in all over 20, in which he dealt with the geology of New Zealand, its history from the Maori immigration to the days of Cook and Tasman, and down to the present time. He traced also the legislation of the colony, expressing his admiration for the spirit and resolution with which the problems of the day were tackled, instead of following the example of the Germans, who were at times too much inclined to sit at the reading desk dealing with theory rather than practice. Then followed letters descriptive of the doctor's travels in the North Island (Auckland, Rotorua and Wellington), the West Coast, and the Alps. In one letter he writes as follows: "We came home from the last jewel of New Zealand which we had to visit, from the boiling lakes and hissing geysers to the lovely delightful busb, which sounds and sings where the sun penetrates so gaily through the tender ferns in the jungle to the holy stillness of the Sounds, the sublime picture of Milford Sound, then to the beautiful cold lakes and the majestic grandeur of the Alps." Dr. Herz's remarks, taken with the context, certainly bear a very different appearance than when picked out in detached sentences. He states in conclusion that the series of letters closed wit}} the following paragraph: "The New Zealander loves his country, feels at home and at ease in the land in which he has established himself, and is, what not every-body at Home can say for himself, "A happy man in a happy country."
