Lyttelton, January 18.—Arrived, at 6.45 a.m.: Aparima, s.s.. from the North. 7.5 a.m.: Talune. s.s., from Wellington.
One by one the popular English novelists of to-day turn their talents to the stage, and soon it will be the e» eeption to find a writer of fiction who has not produced a play. Among the most celebrated of new recruits to the ranks of playwrights are Mr Jacobs and Mr Zangwill. "Merely Mary Ann," produced at the Duke's 'of 'York's, London, proved that Mr Zangwill understood the art of writing snappy conversation for the slage; while "Beauty and the Barge," of which Mr Jacobs is part author, has added fresh lustre to the reputation of the writer of "Man-Car-goes." Mr Hall Came is about to write the next Drury Lane melodrama, while among other novelist-dramatists may be counted J. M. Barrie, Sir A. Conan Doyle, Anthony Hope, Max Petnberton. Sir Gilbert Parker, E. F. lienson, John Strange Winter, Mrs Craigie, Eden Pbilpotts, and many others.
