January 1C An Anarchist calling himself Gessler Konsseau. who dec-lined to give his real jne attempted to blow up the statue O f Frederick the Great recently presented to the United States l>y the Kaiser, and erec ted ,n Washington. Later in the day hf was arrested, when ju) inierual machine was found in his poslie volunteered to the police the information that he sent a similar maohine to tbe Cunard Line pier in 1903. hoping to destroy the stenmer Lmbria. in which a&isn he nearly succeeded. Shortly after his arrest an order was obtained transferring Rousseau to New York. Further inquiries tond to the supposition that he was connected with the explosion, attributed to Fenians, which occurred on the Wclland (.anal, connecting Lake Erie with the Ontario.
