VOLUNTEER NOTES.

THE CAMPS. The two volunteer camps in progress were visited by a large number of people yesterday. The A Battery held a church parade at St. Mary's Cathedral yesterday morning under Captain Bosworfah, and a church parade was also beld by the Coastguards at Takapuna. The latter are encamped on the sloping ground towards Narrow Neck Beach, and are being instructed by the non-coms, of the Permanent Artillery. Captain Napier, who is in charge, hopes to be able again during the camp to justify the company's claim to the "first-«lass" position for big gnn work which it has held for the past eight years. The Battery seems snugly enough encamped on the Outer Domain, and the members are doing good work under the direction of the instructors- Shell practice with the new guns is to be held during the fort- ; night following.

AKARANA RIFLE CLUB.

The members of the Akarana Rifl« Club ihdd the second trophy matches of the season on their range at Penrose on Saturday afternoon. The weather was fine, but a strong westerly wind was blowing. The highest score registered during th/» afternoon was the 85 compiled by Mr J. F. .Atkinson, who wins the medal presented to the club by Mr G. Read, and as he was also successful on the last occasion it was fired for it becomes his absolute property. Mr 15. Rowe, with the score of 78, was first in the "B" class, which fired lor the club's trophy. The best scores sent in ore as noted below:—"A" Class: Messrs. J. F. Atkinson, 86; T. Kerr, 83; J.
