ENCOURAGING UTILITY ' POULTRY.

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) CaiRISTCHURCH, Saturday. The board of governors and directors of the Agricultural College were waited upon yesterday by a deputation from the committee appointed by the recent public meeting to inquire into the matter of holding an egg-laying competition. The deputation explained it was now proposed to form a utility poultry club, which would find the money for building the pens, the prize-money, etc., and see to receiving the birds and placing thera iv their pens They desired Ihe college to undertake the management and feeding of the birds, and to keep the necessary records. A committ~» of advice would be formed from poul-try-keepers and exhibitor*. The proceeds i:' the eggs would go to the college, and the pen* would become its property. It had been proved that such a competition would be run a*. :; profit, and they ■•!•.-?• sted that this should bo divided between the college and the ciub. Mr Hyde, chief Covemraent poultry expert, was present, and explained various points of detail, and the ■-bftinnan. the Hon. Ji. C. .1. Stevens, said the Ixmrd would consider the matter with The director, who would give the deputation an answer in time for the adjourned public meeting next Thursday. The deputation thanked the board for the very favourable reception, and l»efoTe leaving were informed by Mr Lowrie that every effort would be made to arrange for holding the competition on the lines suggested. It is understood that the board will grant the request of the deputation.
