FIRE IN SWANSON STREET.

An Austrian boaxdinghouse at the corner of Swanson- street and Mills Lane, occupied by Mr Nicholas Green, was practically destroyed by fire at about midnight on Sunday. The fire was discovered at 11.45 p.m., and the alarm was at once given to the police and the fire brigade. Constable Lipscombe, who was on duty in Queen-street, immediately' ■*• proceeded to the house. Constable ShM- i; following. The fire had then a very strong hold, the dames issuing through the walls. A man named Douglas Strangeman, who was sleeping on the ground floor, was awakened by the crack ; ling of flames in the next room. He was opening the window when the polk* arrived, and was assisted out, with hi* effects. He lost £7 which was in his - trousers' pocket. Mr Green was absent. at the time, and the only other occupant • of the house, was his son, who slept ia t the rear of the building, and who wa» awakened by the barking of the dogt -■; in the back yard. He immediately rasaed out into the street, having no ths* to dress. The brigade soon arrived on the 9eene, and succeeded in subduing the flames, ' but not before the building had bees completely gutted.
