In the preliminary grade of plumbers' work and of carpentry and joinery, and in the first yeat's course of woodwcrk, the City and Guilds Institute does not differentiate into first and second class, but merely notifies that a student has '■passed' , or "failed." The following is a summary of the results: plain cookery, :>G candidates, 33 passes; woodwork, final, 1 candidate, 1 pass; first year, 42 candidates, 35 passes; plumbers' work, ordinary grade, 9 candidates, 9 passes; preliminary, 14 candidates, 12 passes; mechanical engineering, 1 candidate, 1 pas?; carpentry and joinery, ordinary •iracle. 1 candidate, 1 pass; preliminary. 1 candidate, 1 pass; total, 105 candidates, "J3 passes. The percentage of passes thus works out at SSA per cent. Mr. George, director of Technical Education, in reporting the results to the Education Board this morning, said that when one considered th.it the average percentage of passes for the United Kingdom was 57, this would be admitted a great record. It was the record for the colony. The director asked permission to send letters of congratulation to the instructors, to whose efforts the result was largely due. The Board granted permission, anil also decided (o ask the Education Department for the results obtained in other centres. One heard so much, said the director, about the good work done in the South that it would be interesting to have the comparison.
