EDUCATION ENDOWMENTS.

(fiy Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) ' CHRISTCHURCH, this day. The recent remarks of the Premier regarding the educational xeserves of the colony have naturally frightened the educational authorities in Canterbury. Canterbury College in particular is heavily endowed. Jn response to a I question from a newspaper representative, various members of the Estate Committee of the Board of Governors have expressed themselves most strongly against Mr Seddon's proposal. One member, Mr G. J. Smith, formerly M.H.R. for Christchurea, declared that he hoped the people of Canterbury •would never permit such a grave injustice. The early settlers of Canterbury, with a foresight which we of the present day could hardly over-valuefhad made liberal provision in the way ot endowments for the educational requirements of those who came after them. The fact that the early settlers in the other districts of the colony had made no such provision was no reason why a proposal should be made that Canterbury should now be robbed for their benefit. He had always consistently opposed the Government interfering in any way with these educational reserves for secondary education, and ho would, on : the Board and elsewhere, most strenuously resist the attempt which it was ' evidently proposed- to * make to enrich the other of the colony at the ; expense of Canterbury. The other ' members of the committee, which in* eludes another ex-M.H.R. in the person of Mr G. W. Russell, all spoke in a similar strain. , -
