NEW HEBRIDES GRIEVANCES. (Received 11 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. A petition, signed by 69 adult tud bona fide male settlers of the New Hebrides, has been sent to the Federal Premier, praying for the improvement of the conditions under which British seftleii? are compelled to work in that group Of/ islands. The petition points out that V silent struggle is being carried on by the two nations for local supremacy, atnd'.> grave doubts exist as to which will gall the upper hand. Present indications ap-, pear to point to ultimate French control. ; The French settlers number 255, and th*' British 234. Subsidies and superior transport facilities give the French "t\A ' pull over" their rivals. The petition suf , gests that tne Commonwealth Government "..■ should allow British colonists the sarin preference trith regard to import dutie* '-. on produce as those at present enjoyed fey their French neighbours. , _- • ■
