PORT ARTHUR.
A THREE DATS' ASSAULT. OR A LONG SIEGE.
ANOTHER FORT CAPTURED. LONDON, August 22. The Russian garrison consists of 23,000 men, and it holds a line 12 miles long. The Japanese guards participated in the attacks in the direction of Louisa Bay on Saturday, which 'were unsuccessfuL The attack was continued an Saturday night and yesterday. Xt is stated that the momentary oheok will not affect the Japanese plans, which provide for an assault lasting three days. The Japanese commander says he is able to maintain the assaulting column at a strength of six thousand men throughout the three days. If the assault fails a long siege 'will follow. The Japanese have captured Fort No. 20, which is five miles north of Golden Hill. JAPANESE DEFEATED. A RUSSIAN REPORT. LONDON, August 22. General Stoessel reports that the Japanese on two days attacked the Russian positions on the mountains near Louisa Bay, and were repulsed with heavy loss. JAPANESE REINFORCEMENTS. (Received 9.10 sum) LONDON, August 22. It is announced that four thousand Japanese troops have landed at Dalny. FURTHER REPORTS. RUSSIANS RECOVER POSITIONS ESCAPE OF DESTROYERS. (Received 9.10 a.m.) —"~ LONDON, August 22. The Japanese have succeeded in capturing the most northerly fort of the western line under the Russian defences. The Russian fire, however, prevents its occupation, It is reported in Ghifu that the Rusilnna have recaptured some of their positions. It is also stated that eight Russian destroyers have escaped from Port Arthur, and that seven Japanese destroyers are searching for thain.
