WHAKAREWAREWA MAORI SCHOOL
SECOND YEAK'S YVOKK. The second annual examination of this school took pliuv on Monday and Tuesday. 13th aud loth Insts., with results even more gratifying tban those of last yeai. The examination was attended by all the scholars or. the roll, to the number of 03, and it is interesting to note that one or irvn of these were young people employed in the State nurseries, who. hy parting in a hnlf day now and then, had held on to the school in the hope of getting a pass. That they were not disappointed Is shown iv the fact that there was not a failure in the school, all the 4:; presented for a standard pass getting through with the high average •of eight matks each. Part staging and freehand drawing without the use of iwiianibber gained the highest possible marks. lv computing the examination percentage in Maori schools, the rule is to charge the school five marks for every scnoiar who has been on the roll ikm less than three months, preparatories included, though (hese cannot possibly gain more ttiau two marks each. An additional mark is debited for sewing. On this reckoning the Wtiakarewnrewa school was supposed to be ablp to gain :!60 marks, but with a preparatory "tall" of 18. it seemed questionable whether this Hgure could be reached. However, the ntsiks actually gained totalled 396.5, the examination percentage therefore was 110. The general merit percentage, which last year stood at 95.1, has this year nearly reached high water mark, rhc figures being £*.«. Mu<-h credit is due to the Maori children and their parents for the regularity of attendance for which ihe school Ls noted, and without which the teachers (Rev. H. VT. BurgoyDe anil daughters) could not show such satisfactory results. The dancing and diving, for which the children are famous, are not allowed to encroach upon school hours. The school has had a large number of visitors during: the year, including H.E. Lord Ranfurly, Bishop Welldon, the Director of 'Sducation in victoria, ?.aa other distinguished persons.
