Holbein is going strong, but Haggerty was seized with cramp, and abandoned the struggle after 9hr. 40min. [Captain Matthew Webb was the only swimmer who has ever accomplished, the feat of swimming from Dover to Calais, and no less than 29 years ago. Captain Webb was a strong rather than a fast swimmer, and he took 23j hours in accomplishing the 22$ miles necessary to reach the coast of France.]
