Menzies, Lavery, Ollivier; five-eighths Leans and Byrne; half, Burns: forwards, (,orbett, Shannon. Vincent, Newton.Pearce, Kich, Denham, Roddick Wellington: Fullback. Spencer; three-quarters, Mclntyre, Oray. McGregor; five-eighths. Wallace and Barber; half, Roberts; forwards, Griffiths (wing), Dodd, Watkins, Calnan, Wright. Best, Sweeney, Cross. Between 2000 and 30110 people were present to witness the match. The weather was fine overhead, bnt a strong northerly wind blew down the ground. The home team scored a somewhat lucky win by 6 points (two tries) to 3 points (one try). In the first spell, Canterbury, although heavily handicapped by bavins to play against the wind, put up a fight which was full of merit. At all points of the giimo the visitors were superior to the home team, who had all their work cut out to establish an effective defence. It was anticipated that in the second half, with the wind in their favour, the Southerners wonld have a rather easy wiu, but the unexpected happened. Wellington made It almost wholly a forward game, and the forwards proved greatly superior to the visitors in the loose. They hampered the visiting backs, and prevented them assuming the offensive. Apart from this change of tactics, the gruelling the Southerners underwent against the wind In the first portion of the game must have takeu a lot out of them, and probably largely accounted for their poor showing when ends were changed. On the whole. Use game was not a good exposition of football. Duncau McGregor and Wright each scored a try for Wellington, and Burns scored a try ror Canterbury. There was no score iv the secoud spell. Menzies, Deans, and Burns were the best of the visitors' backs, and McGregor, Wallace, and Gray stood out most prominently amongst the Wellington back division. Deans was probably the best back ou the ground, and Roddick (Canterbury) the best forward. Mr A. C. Norris made an fficient referee. TARANAKI-THAMES MATCH. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
