THE GOLDFIELDS.

ON 'CHANGE. The report that Legge's lode had been picked up again at the 220 ft level in the Old Hauraki mine caused those shares to see a sharp advance at the morning call to-day. Yesterday paid-up issue were offered at 2/, with buyers ai 1/6, but this morning free sales were made at 3/8, while contributing issue sold at 3/4 to 3/6. At the noon call, however, prices fell to sales from 3/3 to 2/9. Bunker's ELII shares fell in price, being sold as low as 'J/10. This was no doubt the outcome of the picked stove obtained last breaking-down being less in quantity than was expected. Kuranu : shares eased in price, selling as low as 1/7 last night, but this morning sales were made from 1/10 to 2/, but later transactions were at 1/9, with further buyers at 1/7. Komata Reef shares changed hands at 2/, and Talisman shares had a sharp advance from 5/G yesterday to 7/G to-day. It is rumoured this is due to the Bonanza reef having been intersected at the low level. As there is no local office of thi3 company it is impossible to ascerta'n the truth or otherwise of these reports. In standard lines, Bank of New Zealand shares firmed up to buyers at 107/, and Kauri Timber Company contributing shares sold at 4/9, with further buyers at 4/8. Paid-up issue were also wanted at 14/3. Other lines showed no change.

OLD HAURAKI. Late yesterday afternoon, a demand suddenly set in for Old Haurakf shares, and by 5 o'clock sales had been made at 2/0, whereas at the noon call 1/6 was the best offer for paid-up shares, and 1/4 for contributing issue. At the 10 o'clock call this morning the demand for Hauraki shares was very strong, free sales being made of paid-up shares at 3/8, and of contributing issue from 3/4 to 3/6. A report from the manager was received this morning, and was open for inspection at Mr Gilfillan's office, before the first call. It stated that the work at the bottom of the shaft had been completed, the plunger placed in position, and a start made to put in the. column and the main rods for the pump. The columns has been raised up about 80 feet, 'and another 100 feet should place it at the required height. A start has also been made to put in the inai'n rods, and a few more da3 r 3 should see this work finished. At the intermediate level in No. 2 cro33 loda, a-bout seven feet have been driven, but so far there is no gold showing. The lode is from one to two inches thick, and some of the stone looks promising. The new lode mentioned in last report, and which is situated 50 feet from the shaft, has been sunk upon six feet. At the first breaking down the lead was split, and intermixed with country rock, but it is now more compact, and the atone is looking much better, and in another 5 feet of sinking it should junction with the mineral vein previously mentioned. The manager considers th-e chances are in favour of an improvement in the value of the ore when this point is reached. The crosscut in the hangingwa.ll of No. 2 winze, sunk on Legge's lode, below the 220 feet level is now in 32 feet. The manager add3:—"l am pleased to say we have just cut a promising looking lode about 6 inches thick, and the course is about parallel with Legge's lode where worked in the level above. I'ca underlie is in the same direction and its position is about the distance to pick it up. So far little or no work has been done on it. I shall at once opefl out and drive on it."

GOLDEX SPARK. The manager reports that operations in the south-east lace at the low level have been pushed on as rapidly as possible with one shift, eight feet having been driven for the week. At each breaking down the lode has consistently shown strong gold in the solid quartz, some pieces being rich enough to class as picked stone. The country i's first-class andesite, and the lode in the face is strong, with the appearance oi continuing 30. BUNKER'S HILL. The manager reports:—"When breaking down on the 17 th in'st. 41b of specimens w-ere secured. The leader still looke well, and specimens should be obtained at next breaking down, which will not take place until the end of the weftk, as the winze requires squaring up aad timbering." NEW CHKLMSFORD. Twenty tons of quartz from the New Chelmsford mine, Upper Tairua, have been crushed for a return of 37ozs. of amalgam from the platee. The boxes have yet to be cleaned, and the tailings treated. The reef is about 3 feet wide, each side of the winze, and all the ore is being sent to the battery. bHABEMABKET.
