UNIVERSITY SENATE.

WELLINGTON, this day.
The University Senate rejected Sir Maurice O'Rorke's motion in regard to having all university examinations conducted within the colony by the present staff of profe-ssors.
Mr Hog-ben moved: "That candidates who gain credit in the junior scholarship examination and declare their intention of taking honours shall be held to have satisfied the requirements of pass B.A. or B.Sc. degree examination in those subjects (not more than three) in which they gam a fixed percentage of the maximum marks in junior scholarship examination."' This was referred to the Recess Committee. Mr Hogben moved: "That any graduate who has passed an examination that would qualitfy for first-class honours in science and presents a suitable thesis should be granted the degree of D-Sc.. whether he has gained B.Sc. or not." This was negatived. On the motion of the Rev. A. Cameron it was resolved that the Senate make provision for the granting of degrees B.Sc. and D.Sc. in veterinary surgery, and that a committee be appointed to draw up a scheme of study hi veterinary medicine and surgery.
The Senate adopted a report of the Medical Committee recommending that the degrees of M.8.. Ch.B., be conferred on Agatha Adams Winifred Bathgate, Alexander Kinder. Gilbert Mirams. Emily Ridley, and Peter Buck. The latter is the tirst Maori to receive the New Zealand medical degree. The following have passed in all subjects, but are not entitled to receive their degrees because they have not yet complied with all the regulations: Thomas McKibben, .Tames Robertson, John Robertson.
Advice ha* been received from the examiners in England by the Chancellol of the University that A. R. Andrews and J. A. Thomson, both of Dunedin, candidates for the 1851 Exhibition Science Scholarship, of the value of £150 ft year, tenable for two years, are equal in point of merit in their papers. The matter is to be considered by the Senate,
