ST. JOHNS COLLEGE. n Bishop of Christehurch moved- "That the 9 Diocesan Trusts Board of Auckland be direeled to proceed to the election 01 two persons to serve as trustees of St. John's < oilcpe. in place of the two retired by rotation. He explained that as two members a had retired it was requisite that the places should be filied." Mr Cptou. while seconding the motion pr.. forma, pointed out that the Diocesan t Trust Board already had the power. The motion was agreed to on The voices Rev. J. P. Kempthorne also moved: "That th : s Synod instructs the Governors of St . John's College to furnish tbe Bishop of , each diocese annually with a report or the . gen ral work of the college, for the pur- . pose of laying the softie before their ref spective Synods.' Archdeacon Williams said reference had - been made to bringing Maoris to St. John's I College. Sr. John's could not pive a very heany welcome- to Te Ran or any other college to .-ome there, it was a pity churchmen would not provide accommodation for : students by putting St. John's College on ■ a proper footing. If that were done. Te Ran College might be brought to St. John's. IJe was sorry there was such a state of 1 unrest about St. John's College, lie feared that slate would exist like a disease until St. John's was made a credit to their Church. It was a crying shame that young men should be kept hack from entering the Chur.h for want of suitable accommodation at St. John's College. Bitsbop Xeligau i hanked Archdeacon 'Williams for his well timed remarks. Bishop Xeligau referred to The financial position of St. John's Colleee. aud said that the recent expenditure there showed there was little intention on the pan of the Board to shift the college to a site nearer the city. If the Church would supply the money St. John's trustee* would put up the requisite accommodation for more students. Mr t'pt.-n said the trustees had expended so murti That at present there wasv T "d so ruueh that tliere was at present a deticii of 114S'— 11 -'4 on the general account. although there was a credit of over £400 the Marsh Scholarship account. The expenditure only made the simplest provision for the students. There was no shadow of a doubt on the part of the trustees, us a whole, that the college would be worked as directed by the General Synod. Archdeacon Williams said his appeal was I Ito the members of the church to tind the! requisite money to aid the trustees to place the college on a proper footing. Bishop Neligan pointed our that they j had elected 30 pupils, although they had i only beds (or 15. and three paying pupils wanted to enter the college. The morion was then adopted. Gratuity" — Mr Seth-Sinith moved: "That the sum of fire pounds be γ-ultl to the clerk r.f the Standing Commission for his services during the past three years, and that the matter be referred to the Committee on Trusts." which was agreed to on the voices. AUCKLAND BISHOPSCOCRT. Mr T'pton moved- "That tke trustees of the General Church Trust be requested to appropriate the sum of £10<i towards the repairs and maintenance of Bishopscourt. Auckland/ In explanation. Mr fptoii said the general principle of such grants in the past had been to aid where money was raised. In Auckland. £4400 had been raised during the last IS months, of which £.2'> mi was for an endowment. They had to ; spend £400 on the bouse, and when the new Bishop arrived he spent another £100 •nit of his own pocket. At Mr Upton's suggestion, thf motion was referred to the Sessional Committee on Trusts. THE MASTERTON" CHURCH. In ihe evening the Synod. In committee. considered the report of the Committee on Trusts on the Masterton church, recommending That the Synod direct the Dio-if-sau Board of Trustees of Wellington to lease the acre on which St. Matthew's Church. Masterton. now ptauds. as soon as it can be vacated, in accordance with a resolution passed by the Diocesan Synod. Wellington, directing the Board of Trustees to Jet such portions of the church acre as Tire not required for church purposes, and to apply The proceeds towards purchasing and aud erecting a church thereon. The I'.ishop of Wellington (Bl3hop Wallis) proposed to insert v proviso To "thee£t >ct thai the permission to lease should ' not be granted unless the Diocesan Synod first agreed that it was expedient that the church should be removed to a site approved by the Synod. He declared that it was proposed to remove the church from a ' site in the heart of the town to one In a : back street, which was not so suitable, the object beins to raise sufficient funds by ■ leasing th- "present site to provide for the ' purchase of the new section, and the erec- ; tioii of .'. new church, th- present site be- ■ ing very valuable for business purposes. I objected to the removal, and thought that the Diocesan Synod should be consulted. Mr Brittain and Mr Henderson de- ' fended thi- suggestion contained in the re- < port, saying that the Masterton people • were the best judges in the matter, and that the new site was not in a back sti »et. | The Rev. C. C. Harper supported the Bishop. On being put to the vote the report of th- committee was adopted, the amendment suggested fty the Bishop of Welling- . ton being rejected. The resolution was then reported to the J Synod and agreed to. MAORI MISSION*. ( The following gentlemen, nominated by the representatives of the seve- . ral dioceses; iv the U.-nc-ral Synod. ( were appoitted members of the Maori Mis- . sion Board:—Auckland. Rev. W. Beatty ', aud Mr Arthur Robertson: YVaiapu. \ en. . \r«:hdeacon Williams and Mr J. li. Fielder: Wellington. Rev. C. C.
