PENNY POSTAGE ON NEWSPAPERS.

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) I WELLINGTON, this day. Great public satisfaction will be creat- ] ed by the announcement that the penny postage upon newspapers to England, irrespective of weight, has been agreed to by the Imperial post office. This is a splendid result after the Postmaster- ; General's long battling for it. It should j he the means of increasing the output I of the splendid weeklies from New Zea- j land, and by their very largely increased j circulation, be an advertisement for all : time for the colony, as well as confer- i ring distinctive advantages upon tlie press of New Zealand. This important concession is entirely due to Sir J. G. Ward's persistent ellbrts. The Postmaster-General proposes to have the penny postage rate upon newspapers brought into operation on the j tirst of March. The Imperial Post Office j desire it to be made clear that the news- j papers must be posted in New Zealand, ] and postage prepaid in the colony.
