SECONDARY EDUCATION.

THE PREMIER'S INTENTIONS. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. The Premier, who is at present in Christchurch, has expressed himself thoroughly satisfied with his recent Northern tour. The country wherever he went showed abundant signs of prosperity, and the electors, politically, were all peaceably inclined towards the Government. He found educational matters, as regarded primary education, secondary education, and technical education, very satisfactory. As Minister of Education, he realised that there wa3 still a great deal to be done in the cause of education, but he noted with a good deal of satisfaction that the amendments already made in the existing regulation had been generally received with the greatest appreciation. With respect to the National Scholarships and the examinations to be held in January next, a feeling prevailed that Parliament had done the right thing and that the scholarships would be very popular. The people had not yet fully grasped the potentialities of the regulation with respect to secondary schools, but when the regulations were better understood there would be only one conclusion, that they were far ahead of anything previously attempted. He expected that before long there would be a thousand free places, and, with the National Scholarships added, this number would be swelled to twelve or thirteen hundred for these scholarships. For securing free places and for the development of technical education, he estimated that a sum of £22,000 would be required irrespective of grants for buildings and for special purposes.
