DEATH AT THE GAOL.
INQUEST CONTINUED,
At the Edinburgh Castle Hotel this afternoon Mr Greshani continued the inquest on the death of Arthur Trenery, who died at the gaol on September 11, while on remand ■ from Dargaville on a charge of drunkenness.
Samuel Thompson, constable stationed at Dargaville, deposed to arresting Trenery at Dargaville on Monday, September 7. He was then called to the Central Hotel, between four and five p.m. He found deceased sitting under a tank in the yard. Deceased looked very haggard and ill. and in reply to a question as to what was the matter with him said, "Oh, nothing, only a little drink." Deceased tried to rise, but could-not. He considered deeebseel was in a feeble condition, and that his condition was the result of drink. Deceased was lightly clad, and was in a filthy condition. With the assistance of witness and another man deceased walked to the police station, where he was charged with drunkenness. Witness put deceased in the cell, and put some blankets ov.r him. and gave him something to eat. Shortly after six witness notified Dr. Mcurice Ihirchas, who arrive- at tbe station about seven. The doctor examined deceased, and said he was suffering from alcoholism. Tlie doctor did not use the stethoscope. The do .tor ordered beef te?- and a little stimulants, which were given him.
