AVONDALE JOCKEY CLUB'S SPRING MEETING.

SECOND DAY

A large gathering, in which the fair sex were well to the fore, evidently enticed out by a glorious spring day. witnessed another {rood day's racing at the above club's picturesque course. The line weather put all in a good humour, and evidently made those who bet feci more puutoblc. the machines showing a total for the day'of £0201, being £02S more than was invested on the corresponding day last year. Mr M. Foley again officiated as judge, and Mr Cutts was successful in despatching the field to a good line. The faces were all got off well up to time, and the arrangements for the second day of the meeting were ably carried out by Mr H. Havr. The Garrison liand was in attendance, and Mr King supplied an excellent luncheon. After Spalpeen had made an exhibition of his opponents In the Second Hurdles, a good held of twelve left the paddock to contest the President's Handicap. Unfortunately Mr Cutis' assistant did not remove the pins, which hold the levers of the gate in position, the tapes in consequence were not released when the starter pulled the lever, and tho whole field broke through. Muskerdale, who wou, again proved his ability by landing the last race of the day in a capable manner. He is a vastly improved horse, and looks it. his bones being now better covered than when racing last season. The Guineas proved a most Interesting cent est. though the winner was undoubtedly assisted by the indifferent handling of at least two of the candidates. Perhaps .the most: surprising thing about the race was the excellent form shown by Idassa, whom It. Hall now trains. This mare was absolutely hist at the back of the course, and had to come up on the outside. This took the steam out of her. and failing a bit at the finish, she finished third. After the horses had weighed in, the winner, Ropa, who was purchased by Messrs Darlot and Dunfee as a yearling' for 2L>o guineas at the Wellington Park sales, was decorated with the ribbon by .Miss Rue, amidst cheers. Kilmarnock won his race nicely

at the finish, though he appeared to stop for some reason ill the entrance to the straight, but came again, and was linishing very fast. Sonoma was ridden by Decley (who was the most successful horseman of the day, he winning three races), just won the Pony Race from Lottie. Had the latter been favoured with a more capable jockey I fancy the result would have been reversed. Idas had no difficulty in winning the Piumpton Handicap, and although Ryan was in such a position that it was scarcely to be avoided, he certainly took a. risk when sneaking up on the inside at the turn. Val Rosa again proved what an unreliable horse he is, & turfites will breathe freer when he is retired. Rae brought off his second win for the day with Waipuna, who may hold his own in moderate company; and the last race was won in good style by Muskerdale, who carried a 51b penalty. The following were the final results:— NURSERY HANDICAP of SOsovs, 4 furlongs. Kilmarnock, 8.8 (Buchanan) 1 Lovelink, 7,2 (Satman) 2 Promotion, S.O (Spcakinan) 3 All faced the starter. Stromness got the worst of the start. Lovelink and Kilmarnock were •in the front till approaching the straight, when Lovelink got a couple of lengths ahead of Kilmarnock, who, however, dashed ahead again, and won by a length, Promotion three lengths away. Time 52 3-5. Dividends—£l 12/ and £1 0/. PONY HANDICAP of SOsovs, 5 furlongs. Sonoma, 7.1 (Deeley) 1 Lottie, 8.0 (Mooney) 2 Orange and Blue, 10.6 (O'Coniiell) 3 All started. Girton Girl led first, but Sonoma headed her into the straight, and won by a neck, a couple of lengths between the second and third horses. A fine race. Time 1.6 2-5. Dividends—£3 5/ and £3 13/. PLUMPTON HANDICAP of 170sovs, one mile. Idas, 7.10 (Ryan) 1 Soultfish, G. 7 (Cotton) 2 The Needle, 8.3 (Bird) • 3 All went to the post. It was a splendid race. Time, 1.47 1-5. Dividends, £1 14/ and £4 11/. HACK HANDICAP of SOsovs, six furlongs. Waipuna, 7.3 1 Simple Simon, 7.2 2 Bonomiana .' 3 Scratched: Mokomoko. Won by a length. Miss Lottie, 7.8 (Cress) .'.". 2 Orange and Blue, 8.0 (Spcakman) ....'.! 3 Rex, Cygnet, and Lady Bobs were in the lead to the half mile post, when Noteoriui went to the front, and Orange and Blue was handy.
