WAIHI.
WAIHI, Tuesday. A complimentary social was tendered last, evening to the Rev. Father Brodie. in honour of the feast day of his patron saint, St. Matthew. There was a large attendance. Mr P. Cooney acted in an efficient manner as M.C. Miss Garvey presided at the piano. Vocal items were contributed by Mrs Barron, Rev. Brodie. and Messrs Brennan, Lawless. Clarfein, and Keane. The entertainment was organised by the ladies of St. Joseph's church. An enjoyable smoke concert was tendered last evening to Mr G. Smart, of the Lily Entertainers, on the occasion of his approaching marriage. Mr J. Woodham, manager of the club, presided, and presented a handsome set of carvers and a purse of sovereigns to the guest of the evening, on behalf of the Lily Club, and his bachelor friends. The recipient suitably responded. Mr J. Foster has had a requisition from a number of the burgesses asking him to stand for the vacant seat on the Borough Council. So far no candldatV-s are announced. Mr Bartley, architect, of Auckland, arrived last evening in Waihi, and" is today engaged at the Hospital in connection with his business as architect to the institution.
