POLICE COURT—THIS DAY.

(Before Mr H. W. Brabant, S.M.)

Long Drunkards' List. —No fewei than li persons were charged with drunkenness, including James Downey, a powerfully-built man, who was also charged with resisting Constable Curtin in the execution of his duty. Downey denied this, but Curtin was corroborated by another constable, who said the defendant struggled and kicked with such violence that Curtin was quite exhausted. Downey had to be held down in the cab which took him to the watchhouse. He was put into the cab once, but got out on the other side.- Downey denied being violent, but added that the policeman threw him down, and he could'not be expected to go to the watch-house quietly after that. Questioned by Sub-Inspector Black, Downey said he could not recollect having been previously convicted on a similar charge. Tie knew he had recently served two months' hard labour for assault, but it was not his owe fault. His Worship pointed out that Downey had been repeatedly convicted, and he would be fined 5/ for the drunkenness, while for resisting the police a fine would be inadequate. Accused would be committed for a month's hard labour. Six first offenders were convicted and discharged for drunkenness, and two who did not appear each forfeited fl bail . Martin Lestrange and Robert Jones were fined 5/ each, and George Mclvor and Frank Thornton, who .were disorderly as well as intoxicated, were fined £-1 each. . Negligence Penalised. —Robert Snell Laud, who pleaded guilty, was fined 40/ and costs, the minimum penalty, for failing to furnish a return of the land owned by him to the Commissioner of Taxes. Mr W. J. Napier, who represented the latter, did not press for a heavy penalty. Boy's Escapade. — Claude Marmont, aged 14, was cautioned and discharged for furiously riding a horse in Abbotstreet.
