A MAN KILLED.
RUN OVER BY AN ENGINE,

CHRISTCHURCH, this day.
A man named John Baretta was rus over by a tram from Sumner last nightj and killed. The tram had just passed iiurns' jetty, when the driver saw, a shorfl distance ahead, a man wheeling a bicycle between the rails. The driver reversed his engine, and applied the brakes immediately, at the same time shouting to the man to leave the tracks. His efforts however, proved futile. The engine struck the man, knocked him down, rail over him,and dragged him along for some distance. The following car also passed over the body. The bicycle was also run over and dragged along by the engine. When the man was extricated it was found that death must have been instan* taneous, as his neck was broken, nearly every bone in his body fractured, and his feet severed.
