POLICE COURT—THIS DAY.

(Before Mr H. W. Brabant, S.M.) Previously Convicted. —All the drunkards appearing had been preAiously convicted. John McNaughton, James Smith, and James Scanlon were all nn>d 10/ and costs for that offence.

A Figlit in Customs-street.—John Purcell and John Stewart admitted having caused a breach of the peace by fighting in Customs-street, and the marks upon one of their faces bore this out. SubInspector Black said that the men had ft stand-up fight, and they were fined £1 each.

Chimney Fire. —A fine of 10/ was paid by William Reid for allowing the chimney of his house to catch lire.

Exemplary Sentences.—-A sailor named Charles Swanson was charged with using obscene language on the barque Lyra at Queen-street Wharf and assaulting Alexander Thompson, the cook. The captain stated that Swanson used abominable language, besides assaulting Thompson, and had "to be put off the ship. His Worship committed the accused for a fortnight's imprisonment on each charge.

Alleged .Disorderly House.— Georglna O'Shea was charged with being an idle and disorderly person, having insufficient lawful means of support, and having been convicted as such. She was also charged with being the occupier of <i house in Abercrombie-street, used as a brothel. A young ' man named James Marshall pleaded not guilty to being fin idle and disorderly person, who habitually consorted with prostitutes, and assisted in the management of the brothel. Mrs O'Shea said she could prove she had proper means of supporting herself, and denied the allegation of brothel-keeping. She asked for a week's remand to secure evidence, and this was granted, bail being allowed, on the accused's security of £50 and another for a similar amount.
