Bombay Jmrers were quiet, but there was a good de2fff«" Jsla. Prices are slightly easier to castor oil, with little business passing, i trade circular from Singapore states that fopplles of black pepper during the month Sve been light, but will increase with the Stond crop next month. I'here is more Siation in the article aroused by Its Exposition; the market is not likely to STwiy much, and any drop is likely to be temporary. White pepper Is very scarce 2nd deaV, but may give way when Sarawak Hajon is on, commencing June, but not !££ until July. The crop is estimated fnllT canal to last year, and may exceed a Uttte There has been better inquiry for too tea Quotations for seed and medium Marl sn<w decided improvement, but a fur- £ advance was not looked for Prices to b£s» rice have been well maintained, X considered likely to keep steady. jK Reserved pineapples easier prices are looked for later in the season, but at pre£!t factories are too full of contracts to market continues to be well sTjßplied, and prices generally speaking are lower than usual at this season r f the year. Orangee and mandarins in particular are in fceavy supply, and the latter are offered at S low prices retail. Owing to the wet season local pie-melons were not so good as Mua but supplies have been obtained torn Sydney, and sold freely at Id per lb retill- Advices from Sydney leport that the quality of the Parramatta district fruit £s never looked better than it doesi this season but prices are unusually low. Cases "pretty fair oranges only realised 10d each at the Parramatta saleyards recently. At it is easy to beliere the statement that growers are giving away their fruit by the cartload because It wiU not pay ■'tn Rpnd In at such low rates. TbebSvy rain last week benefited some of the timber mill, by bringing logs down to the booms. One local mill got a_ tnoueand log Tup this week as the result of a ??PRh Re river. Aβ the rain seemed pretty leneriu no doubt similar results will be reSed from other places. A good supply Sloe* W an important matter just now, as iftNlh are foil of orders for export «nd also for home requirements, resulting from the activity of the building trade at snares have met with excelSMThS*"* Paper Mill Bhares soW at 30/ and Gisborne Gas at 3</6, bat the satisfactory nature of the annual renort PaldSpSne have been in request TS/9, and contributing sold at 4/ and; W Insurance shares are not quite so tally SSdae they were, due no doubt to the fact that when Parliament is alt toe there is always the possibility <rf fete flre insnrance being introduced. Bank shares have firmed in price. Nationals being now wanted at 93/, and New Zealands at 80/, but no sel ing price 3 quoted. Tonson Garllck Co.'s shares sold at a slight advance this week, and otter lines maintained their price, f dividend of 2/ per share has been declared by the New Zealand Insurance Company. Mlnlnfltooks have had a little more attention this week, which ranted by the steady increase In the gold returns, as shown by the fact that as compared with the output for the first naif of the year 1902, the yield from the Aucktod goldfields for the past six months ihows an excess of nearly £85,000. I ausmn Consolidated shares advanced owing to the return this month being a record one. Sales were made as high as Wt>, out yesterday shares changed hands at a stilling under that figure. Mahara Royals sola at 3/1 and 3/2, and reports from the mine state that the ore coming to hand Iβ still payable. Bunker's Hill shares sold at 4/7, with further buyers at the same rate Walhi Extended and Waihl South shares both firmed slightly yesterday, and Old Haurakis sold at 3/3. Tributers in the mine had an excellent return of over ±.80 per ton for five tons of ore, and including picked stone. A ~ , ~,„ Maize.—Arrivals this week totalled Wo 9 sacks, which, being in exceus of requirements caused the market to fall to z/o. No doubt now that maize has fallen to that price It will be more generally used for poultry feed, as fowl wheat is still o/ii per bushel, ex store. At present there seems no outlet for maize excepting a small quantity going to Wellington and Duiiedin, which does not absorb the surplus from Auckland. There does not appear much chance of any buying for Sydney for at all events some time to come, consequently maize is likely to rule low in price. Some of the maize thW week was rather soft, and had to be sold at 2/3. Oats.—Stocks of feed oats held locally we still heavy, and until the glut is worked off there is little chance of improvement In prices. Values in the South are unchanged. Regular shipments are being made from there to South Africa. Locally a demand has set in for white and black tartars, also sparrowbills, for sowing for green feed. Wijeat.—The market for milling wheat Is vefy firm, as very little is being offered at present. Seed wheat is also firm. A fine sample of white Tuscan arrived by the Zealandia this week, and is quoted at 5/5, ex store. Good samples of seed wheat teem scarce this season, a lot of it being shrivelled. Fowl wheat declined In price this week, no doubt due to some extent to the sudden drop In maize. The quotation now is 3/11 ex store. Potatoes.—The potato market is weak, good Southern Derwents being quoted at £4 5/ er store. A few local potatoes are wing sent up from the coast by sailers, but although of good quality they are rather tough and badly shaped, evidencing lack of <*re In selecting seed. There is a good inquiry for seed, but farmers are hampered in their planting operations by the continuous drizzly weather. A week's fine weather Just now would greatly facilitate Planting. Onions.—Arrivals from the South this week have been of fair quality. Prime lots »re worth from £4 10/ to £5 per ton. Hay is meeting with good inquiry. Chaff.— The market is a little easier this week, owing to heavy arrivals from the South. Although prime chaff is quoted M £5 ton, the tendency appears to be In the direction of lower prices ruling. Bran and sharps are dull of sale. South«n v millers appear anxious to force sales w bran on this market. • Butter and Eggs.—Quotations for butter . VO. eggs were not altered this week.
