FRISCO MAIL SERVICE.
S,OOO TON STEAMERS
The present steamers engaged in the mail contract between iSan Francisco and Auckland have done a great deal, not only in popularising the route, but also in establishing a good trade in general merchandise. Now the Oceanic Company, of which Mr. J. D- ttpreckela is managing director, find that, with sufficient inducement from the New Zealand Government in the matter of subsidy, there is sulncieii- to warrant them building four new steamers »,Qf aOOOtons each, to replace the 0000-ton vessels at present engaged in the trade. The proposal will be placed before Parliament, and should the subsidy be increased sufficiently to warrant the construction of the steamers, the company will then contract for a fortnightly service, in lieu of the present three-weekly service The steamers now engaged 'will be disposed of.
