ARBITRATION HINTS.

IMPORTANCE OF THE EMPLOYMENT BOOK.

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)

WELLINGTON, this clay. Mr S. Brown, a member of the Arbitration Court, has evidently a pocr opinion of the mental calibre "of the era- * plovers. Tie remarked at yesterday morning's sitting of the court that they "were more thick-headed than unionists/ In- understanding the awards of thu court, the employers, he said, did not seem to take 'the. trouble to read and study the awards, the. terms of which were clearly set forth by the court. x Mr Justice Cooper dropped a wise liinl to unionists at yesterday's sitting of the Arbitration Court as to the importance of the employment book. His Honor said the proper keeping of such a book was of great importance to unions. Under the terms of awards made by the court it was necessary that the -unions should keep a properly posted employment book at a convenient place before preference of employment could be claimed by members of the union. H the book was not properly kept, and not made available to the employers, then the union could not claim preference for its members over. non-unionists. The book could be easily kept if the officers of the union would only take the trouble to read the conditions set out in the awards, and they should understand that no claim for preference could succeed unless the boo.i \va? properly kept. The book could ft!* o be made a great convenience to the employers. The court gave point, to its president's remarks by dismissing a c^lTi for preference, because the employment book had not been properly kept.
