An assault which will probably result in the death of Mrs Morris, a resident of Mangere, Auckland, over 80 yeare of age, occurred six weeks ago,- and was kept from the press till a few days ago. She was found unconscious on her bed on the 26th ultimo with an incised wound on the top of her head, both eyes bruised, wounds on the face and back of the head, a gash on the left ear, and bruises on the throat of such a character as to give the impression that she had been garroted. A portion of the left ear lobe was missing. She was removed to a private residence, and is now in a critical condition. Mrs Morris has made a statement to the effect that two Maoris entered the house and violently assaulted her. She had £45 in the house. It was known by neighbours that she kept sums of money on the premises. Robbery is supposed to have been the motive of the assault.
