CUSTOMS DUTIES.

'AN AUCKLAND RECORD."

Mr Alexander Rose (Collector of Customs) has compiled a statement of receipts for the financial year, ending March 31st last, which shows that the returns for the port of Auckland have established a record so far as the port itself is concerned, and also for the whole colony. During the financial year, which commenced on April Ist, 1902, the Customs duties collected amounted to £612,666, an increase on the previous year of £57,764. The beer duties amounted to £19,489, which shows an increase of £1,020. The total exports under the various heads are: —Butter, 39,030 cwt., value £155,535; cheese, 3,377 cwt., value £7,086; meats, frozen: beef, 38,854 cwt,, value £48,589; mutton (42,930 carcases), 20,220 cwt., £23, 745; lamb (74,366 carcases), 22,999 cwt., £35,857; pork, 121 cwt... £317; other kinds, 517 cwt., £818.

The Customs returns for the month ending March 31st compare with the corresponding period last year as under: The net Customs duties amounted to £52,609 2/10, as against £46,417 7/0 last year, an increase of £0,192. The net beer duty was £1,647 11/1, compared with £1,695 12/9, a decrease of £48.

The export of precious metals was &a under: Gold, 20,9700z5, valued at £74,----147, as against 15,7100z5, valued at £55,----178; silver, 89910z5, valued at £8,836, compared with 48,3640z5, valued at £5,634.

The export of produce was: Butter, 5241cwts, valued at £24,862, as against 1784c\vt, valued at £8201; cheese, 27 cwt, valued at £74, compared with 239 cwt, valued at £454.

The amount of frozen meats exported was: Beef, 209cwt, valued at £399; lamb, 5649cwt, Valued at £10,071; mutton, 1277c\vt, valued at £1502; other kinds. 237cwt, valued at £301. During the same period last year no frozen meats Avere exported.
