WAIHI, this day
A swimming race for £5 a-side and a side wager of £16, between Joughin and Mac Donald. took place on Sunday morning. The event attracted some hundreds of spectators, who lined the stream to Worth's Paddock. The match was lhe outcome of the swimming event at the Miners' Sports last week. Mr Marshall acted as starter, and Mr Cunningham as judge. The course was 75 yards straight. Both'swimmers were scratch, having a standing start. Joughin took the load from the start, and gradually Increased it, breasting the tape three lengths ahead of Mac Donald. A fair amount of money changed hands.
Mr A. Y. Ross, a member of the Waihi Borough Council, ls a candidate at the licensing election on the Independent ticket. This makes tlie fourth candidate representing Waihi. It is rumoured that one of the candidates at lhe Mayoral -lection in April will probably be a lady, well known locally for her canvassing capabilities.
* The borough employees intend holding sports on Buster Monday. The (Waihi Rifles Shooting Committee has decided to commence a series of matches on Saturday for Messrs Hallenstein Bros.' presentation clock.
