Mr Geo. Knight, butcher, of Karanga-hape-road, has, at the request of a number of tradesmen of that thoroughfare, decided to stand for the Grafton Ward at the municipal elections. The commission in the ''John King Inquiry," defining the scope of the matters to be inquired into, has been issued at Wellington, and the hearing will be commenced under the presidency of Mr W. R. Haselden, S.M.|, on Monday morning next. The United Friendly Societies' Conference Committee have appointed Drs. Murphy, Patterson, and Sproulc medical attendants to the members of friendly societies. None of the Auckland doctors put in an application for the position. The salary is £400 per annum. The Mayor of Auckland (Mr Alfred Kidd, M-H.R.) this morning wired to the Wellington architect. Mr Coleridge, to this effect. "Considerable dissatisfaction exists here that Auckland builders have no opportunity of tendering for the Veterans' Home. Please reply, giving reasons." A few minutes later Mr Hutcheson, president of the Builders' Association, called on the Mayor to ask for his assistance in the matter. At the time of going to press no reply had been received from the architect, or from the Governor, to whom the secretary of the Builders' Association jwired yesterday. A prominent builder, commenting on the state of affairs this morning, stated that although the Wellington advertisement had been altered by the addition of a sentence stating that plans woidd be on view at the four chief cites of the colony the builders here are still ignorant of where those plans are to be seen, although the tenders close on Friday next. He added that it was a well known fact that Wellington builders were very busy just now, and the Wellington tenders would be high in consequence. The action of the Wellington committee was, lie considered, very strange, unless it were intentional, in which case —he shrugged his shoulders to imply that in that case there was no.thing strange. Mr Joseph Blades, solicitor, of Auckland, was to-day adjudged a bankrupt on a creditor's petition. The first moping has been fixed for Wednesday, the Lsth. Mr and Mrs Coxon and staff (laundry experts) commence classes of instruction in St. George's Hall to-morrow morning. See advertisement in this issue.—AfU
