A SWANSON SENSATION.
A man named William Stewart, a*ed 50 years, was found in the bush near Swan son yesterday morning in a dying condition, with his throat cut. Stewart had been working at a flaxmill in Waitakerei \ alley since last--/.rhursday for a man named John O'Donovan. He shared a' tent with a man named Henry Kobert Shields, but packed his swag yesterday morning at about six o'clock, preparin-! to trek. He was in the habit of l m im his meals at a boarding-house near by but his absence from the breakfast table yesterday caused uneasiness amono- % mates, and O'Donovan and two other men went to his tent to search for bun. While searching they heard groans corn* ing from the bush near the tent, and ort j.oing to investigate they found Stewart lying on the ground with his throat cut,, and evidently [dying. His jugular vein' was severed. Ho. _?ked for water, and this was brought, ancl two minutes later he died. A dor-tor was summoned, but did not arrive. At the. dead man's side were found a pipe and tobacco, a pocket-knife and a razor. \ Apparently deceased had committed suicide. Constable Gordon, of Avondale, had the body conveyed to the! Avondale Hotel, where Mr. Gresham was holding an inquest this afternoon. j
