VOLUNTEER NOTES.

The two Waihi Companies of Volunteer* held field drill on Saturday afternoon under Colonel Davies and Major Kenrick, who put the men through a series of use* ful military manoeuvres on the Recreation Ground and the adjacent country. There was a good muster of men.

The Domain camp, which was got In readiness by a party in charge of Pay and Quartermaster-Lieutenant G. J. Dormer last week, was entered upon by the No. I Battalion of the Auckland Infantry on Saturday afternoon, the seven sections—com* prising the Victoria, College, Gordon, Newton, and Nos. 1, 2 and 3 Native Rifles—parading at the Drill Hall, and marching t« the Domain in command of Lieut.-Colonel White, and headed by the Battalion BantL. They were also joined by the Eden Defence Cadets. The camp is pitched on the portion of ground known as the old Chinamen's Gardens. The pitching of. the tenld was busily proceeded wLtlFtluring Saturday, afternoon, and in the evening general leave was granted. On Sunday morning the meu attended St. Paul's Church, and listened' to a sermon by the chaplain of the No. 2 Rifles, the Rev. W. H. Wilson. The Edeu Cadets attended St. David's Presbyterian Church, where the Rev. W. Gray Dixon* M.A., preached. The camp will continue; for a week.

The Thames No. 1 Rifles paid their an* nual visit to the Devonport Submarine Mia-' ers on Saturday, arriving by the Wakatere at about 5 p.m. They were In command of Captain J. Shand, and were attended by. their band. The Devonport men, under Captain Parket, met them at the Devonport tee, and accompanied them to the Drill Hall for refreshment. Ou Sunday evening the visitors attended St. Paul's Church, and they returned to". Thames about ten o'clock last evening. '<

An interesting match took place on the Avondale range on Saturday, when a team! of the Akarana Rifle Club defeated the meu of H.M.s. Archer by 654 points to 515. The ranges were 200, 500, and 600 yards, sevea shots at each. The scores were as follow:— , H.M.s. Archer: Lieut. Stewart, 75; G. J* Wright, T. 1., 75; T. Matthews, A.8., 72; Pvte. A. Waterman, R.M.L.1., 70; Me: Pacey, R.N., 69; Pvte. H. Ilerfiert, R.M.L.L, 56: W. Holford. E.R.A., 51; G. Sparrow, A.8.. 47: total, 515. Akarana Government Rifle Club: Rifleman J. D. Webster, 91; Rifleman J. F. Atkinson, 85: Rifleman A* G. Maughan, S3; Rifleman E. Pollard, 82; Rifleman J. J. Buchanan, 81; Rifleman A. Henderson, 81; Rifleman J. Anderson, 78; Rifleman A. G. Cooke, 73: total, 654.

Mr W. Cox's prixe for the Akarana Clnb competitions was presented to the winner, Mr Anderson, on Saturday.

The Devonport Coastguard Artillery, S8 strong, went into camp at Fort Takapuna on Friday last for 10 days' training under Sergeant-Major Rowles and others of the Permanent Force. Rifle-firing at targets in the channel, floating at unknown ranges, will be included in the drill, besides big smu firing and many other interesting duties. The annual gunnery examinations for the Government prizes will close the camp. The camp promises to be one of the most ea« joyabie the company has ever held.
