TRUE STORY OF WELLINGTON.

This Story (hitherto unpublished) was told to a Contributor to the "Scotsman.") Some time after the battle of Waterloo all London—in default of seeing the real thing—was rushing to a certain picture exhibition to study the historic scene on danvas. One day Wellington himself, accompanied by. a favourite young Highland Lieutenant, came in. Of course he was recognised directly, and equally of course everyone pretended not to be looking at him but at the picture. Conversation sunk to a murmur, everyone was breathless, eager to catch and treasure whatever the great man should say of the great battle.

At last it came (you remember, by-the-by, the weather at the time of the battle).

The Iron Duke turned to tits Highland friend. "MaeL," said he, the crowd hanging on his words, "MacL. it's too d—jd clean!" and walked away, filled with memories of the too, too sticky mud of Mont St. Jean!
