POLLY'S PUNISHMENT.
A London County Council inspector o£ weights and measures is said to vouch for this story:—One day the inspector called at a shop, whose ow»er kept a parrot, and proceeded to examine all the weights. "When he had done so and found them all correct he turned to" go. Suddenly the parrot called out in a loud voice. "Short weights under the counter." The inspector found that this was so, and summoned the grocer, who was fined for cheating. In a great rage the man wrung the parrot's neck and threw it into the pigsty, thinking it was dead. The bird, however, revived, and, seeing the pigs, said to them, "Did you say 'Short weights under the cexunter?' " The grocer heard the words, and at once forgave the bird
