THE HOLIDAYS.

The last, of the Christinas -and. ;New Year holidays, was observed to-day. The weather was ■ dull and the sky overcast, but none the less crowds of holiday-makers patronised the various land and.water The races were the i strongest attraction for the day, all the drains to the Ellerslie Racecourse being crowded with devotees of "the sport of Kings." The steamers proceeding to. the various picnic resorts; in and around the harbour were all well patronised, the decks of all being crowded with excursionists. The Wakatere, was, as usual, ship-full on her run to Cowe's Bayy Waiheke, and the Wellington, which ran to Waiwera and Mahurangi Heads, was patronised with similar liberality. The Deyonport Ferry Company carried large numbers of picnickers to Motutapu, St. Helier's Bay, Lake Takapuna and Pine Island. A fair number of townspeople proceeded by special train to Drury, where the annual race meeting , was held.
