HAWKE'S BAY J.C. SUMMER MEETING.

NAPIER, Thursday.

The Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's Summer Meeting was commenced at Hastings co-day. The weather was fine, but warm. There was a large attendance. The course was in nice order, and the racing good, though none ol' the finishes were very close, the last race of the day, the New Year Handicap., providing the best finish. Mr Abe Shanning, of Wellington, was present, and will make the handicaps for the second day, in the absence of the club's handicapper, Mr J. E. Henrys, who is at the Rangitlkei meeting. The sum of £4976 was put through the totalisators. Mr Harry Piper was as successful as usual with the starting, two of iihe despatches being made with the barrier and the remainder with the flag. The results are as follow:—

Maiden Hack Handicap of. BQsovs; 5) furlongs.—Covenant Maid 1, Wildcat 2, Moat 3. Also started: Optimist, Rapids, lifeboat, No Shot. Covenant Maid won by a clear length. Time, L9J. Dividends, £2 13/ and £1 4/.

Christmas Handicap of SSsovs; 6 furlongs.—Westguard 1, Assayer 2, Secret Society 3. Also started: Good Interest, Camelcrt, Mongo/nui, and (Stepdaughter. Westguard got home, by a length from Assayer. Time, 1.17. Dividends, £1 19/ and £1 1/.

Welter Hack Handicap of 60sovs; 1 mile.—Asteroid 1, Liquefy 2, Craftsman 3. Also started: North Star, Apres, Defoe, Koseshoot, and Taniwha. Won easily by two lengths. Time, 1.47. Dividends, £2 4/ and £10 1/.

President's Handicap of 150sovs; ij mile. —Kahuwal 1, Menura 2, A.B.N. 8. Also started:* Meta McCarthy. Wcm after a slashing finish by a short neck. Time, £.414. Dividend, £2 18/.

First Handicap Hurdle Race of 60sovs; 1J mile.—Cobra 1. Eclaire 2, Abergeldle 3. Also started: Frost and Wathek. Won

by two lengths. Time, 3.34. Dividend, £i'is/, ■'■""■.i " ;; ■' .r.. i Two-year-old Handicap of 60sovs; 5 furlongs.—ldea 1, Seagull 2i Captain Kettle 3. Also.started: Tortoise and I>earHeart. Won with ease by three lengitha. Time, 1.4. Dividend, £3 9/.

Flying Hack Handicap of BOsovs; 6 furlouigs.—Gold Dust 1, Wltchet 2, Hydrant and Catspaw (dead heat) 3. Also started: Brilliantlne, Ogle, Rapid, and Creusot. Won by a length. LI7J. Dividends, £2 3/ and 14/.

New Year Handicap of 70sovs; 1 mile.— Ballyneety 1, Oingo 2, Bland 3. Also started: Lady'& Link, Roseplot, Inspah, Whirlwind, and Liquefy. The best finish of ithe day ended in a short half-length win for Ballyneety from Oingo, Eland a good third. Time, 1.44. Dividends, £3 and £12/. • •
