THE EGMONT SEAT.
MR JENNINGS ELECTED
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
NEW. PLYMOUTH, this day,
The official return from Piriaka alters the figures in the Egmont electorate, giving Mr W. Jennings a majority of seven. Mr Leech's figures at Piriaka (which is near Taumarunui, where the Main Truk line crosses the Wanganui) were 18 instead of 31.
The Hon. William T. Jennings, who was formerly on the stair of the "Auckland Star," and some years ago received a call to the Upper House, is now a resident of Taranaki, having inherited considerable property there from his late uncle, Mr Seft'ern, of New Plymouth He has for many years been a prominent champion of the cause of labour, and was instrumental in organising - the Auckland tailor'esses and other bodies of workers. He recently resigned his seat in the Legislative Council in order to contest the Egmont electorate, for which he is now returned after an exceedingly close contest, the result of which for a time appeared to be in his opponent's favour. Mr Jennings is a strong supporter of the present Government. He had been a member of the Upper House for seven years, and was recently re-ap-ipointecl for a further term.
