THE AUSTRIAN'S AND THE WRECK.
I As was stated in our issue of Thursday, the Austro-Hungarian Consul (Mr Langguth) decided to sift to the bottom the allegations made against the behaviour of the Austrians at the time of the wreck. To this effect the eleven Austrians aboard the Elingamite were assembled at the Consulate this morning, and other survivors , were asked to attend.1 Capt. Attwood, ! who has gone: to Eotorua, forwarded 'an explanation, through Mr Saunder--1 son, to the effect that he personally I lusd^no accusations, to make against I tha Austrians. He believed that when ! orders were given for the passengers •j to take to the boats two foreigners, ! who he was not sure were Austrians, were hurrying forward amongst a I number, and he simply asked them to ! stand aside and not to come to-o fast, ! and they immediately obeyed the ! order. Captain Keid, who was also unable to attend, on account of the state of his health, sent a message to the effect that he could not specifically accuse the Austrians of any improper conduct, as he understood that there were other foreigners on board. He promised to attend in a week if his health would permit. Mr McGeorge, a passenger, who we - interviewed by a "Star" representative, attended, and said that he could not identify any of the passenrers present as having done anything objectionable, b"ut he pointed out one or two Austrians present as haviug assisted in pulling one of the boats.
The Salvation Army's Brass Band will play in the- Albert Park this evening, when a collection will be taken up for the sufferers by the wreck of the Elingatnite.
