NEWMARKET.

The Newmarket Council met last evening. His Worship the Mayor (Mr James McColl) in the chair. There were also present, Councillors F. Bennett, A. Seccombe, J. Gas-ton, E. Davis, F. Shepherd, W. Edgerley and John McColl Fire Brigade an-d Insurance.— The Secretary of the Newmarket Fire Brigade wrote asking the Mayor and Council l«>rs to attend the quarterly inspection of the brigade to-night This was agreed 'to. Mr Davis said that owing to the inefficiency of their fire brigade from the Insurance Company's point of view, Newmarket ratepayers were compelled to pay higher rates than in the city* He thought it would be well to consider whether improvements in the brigade could not bo made. The Mayor said he thought the excuse of the Insurance Companies for charging higher rates was a very lame one, as at present the Newmarket brigade was, both as to appliances and men, equal in efficiency to any other suburban brigade. On Mr Bennett's motion tlie question was referred to the Waterworks Committee to report at next meeting.

Water Carts: Messrs John McLean and Co. wrote offering two water carts at £15 each. The Foreman of Works was instructed to Inspect the oarts and report.

Tramway Poles: Messrs J. G. White and Co., tramway contractors, wrote in reference to the Council's request that tramway poles should be erected flush with the kerb. They stated that to comply with the Council's request would, in some cases, necessitate the poles passing through shopkeepers' signs on top of verandahs, also in all cases where the poles were erected through verandahs, the sills of the latter would have to be cut and secured to the poles. It was pointed out further that when the wires were affixed to the poles, temporary supports would have to be supplied for the verandahs. The writers stated that the poles already erected were located with the approval and in the presence of the Mayor and the Foreman of Works; they (the writers) trusted that the Council would further consider their request for an alteration. The Mayor said he had never been consulted as to the location of the poles, which were erected entirely without the Council's permission. It was resolved to ask the writers to move the poles flush with the kerb as already requested.
