THE OPENING CONCERT.

MELBOURNE, September 23.

There was intense enthusiasm over Madame -Melba's first appearance last night before a brilliant audience. Thousands in the streets cheered the diva as she drove to the Town Hali. After the first number, a scene from "Lucia," she received a tremendous ovation. Madame Melba was overcome, and fainted. When she recovered she sang- '-Home, Sweet Heme," as an encore. The first note of the air was greeted with a terrific outburst of applause.'

Interviewed after the concert, Madame Melba said: "I am overwhelmed at the spontaneous welcome. It has been a glorious hbme-ooming.*'
