WELCOME TO LIEUTENANTS L. AND J. SHERA.
Last evening a social of welcome to Lieutenants L. M. and J. D. G. Shera, of the Seventh and Eighth Contingents, N. 2. Mounted Rifles, Vas held in St. Mark's Parish Hall. The hall had been very tastefully decorated for the occasion with bunting, greenery and flowers. The Rev. W. Beatty presided, ana briefly welcomed the g...iests of the evening, and also welcomed Sergt. Harry Draper, of Remuera. The two returned officers returned thanks briefly, and hearty cheers were given for them by the assembled company. Among those present were Lieutenants Conn (Seventh and Tenth Contingents), Simpson (Seventh), Rich and Walker (Queensland Imperial Bushmen). Lieut. Rich was associated with Lieut. J. D. G. Shera in the action for which the latter was mentioned in despatches. Lieutenant Conn, in returning thanks on behalf of his comrades, said the New Zealanders had been spoken of as the best soldiers that had gone to the war. The New Zealanders were in his opinion, not soldiers, but fighting men, and this statement about their being the best soldiers was an injustice to the other colonies. During the evening Miss M. Heywood played a pianoforte solo. Misses K. Thompson and Ivy Buddie contributed songs, Mrs and Miss B. Kinder a duet, and recitations were given by the Rev. W. Beatty and Miss O. Meredith. The farcical comedy, "The Crystal Gazer," was also performed, the characters being taken by Misses Ware and X Thompson. Refreshments were handed round during the evening. The committee who organised this .very successful function were Mesdames Reid, Maitland Corbett, Kinder, Ware and Hardie,-Misses Iv. Lennox, I. Buddie, and Messrs T C Buddie, G. Reid and.F. Corbett.
