THE WAIHI SLIMES CASE.
PRISONEPtS SENTENCED
Cyril Doug-las Finn and James Eagar, the accused in the celebrated Waihi slimes stealing case, were again brought up for sentence . on August 12 at the Supreme Court. Judge Conolly, in the course of sentencing prisoners, said: —I have very little doubt some other persons — I will not say what other persons — were in the matter as well as yourselves. I had no hesitation in coming to the conclusion that there were others implicated. WhetheT the parties you have named in your papers were implicated or net is not for me to saj until they are put on their trial, if they are put on their trial. It will be a very proper matter for the police to enquire into and see whether there is evidence against those parties. I have not thought it right to read those declarations or allow them to be read in Court. They are in the shape of private information, on which the police may act if they think it is advisable, and the names could not transpire until the matter is regularly before some Court. I shall treat you as persons who have for the first time committed an offence, but yet an offence of such a nature that it would not be a proper subject for probation. The sentence of the Court to you and each of you is that you be imprisoned in Auckland prison and kept at hard labour for twelve calendar months.
