GREY LYNN BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The Grey Lynn Borough Council met last night. Present: Messrs R. T. Warnock (Mayor), J. Parrell, R. Hall, W. Brinsuen, R. C. Poster, W. White, C. McMaster, T. Booth, and A. Donald. At the ordinary meeting it was decided on the motion of Cr. Farrell "That the sanitary contractor be asked to furnish information as to what steps he had taken towards carrying out the contract under the new contract to introduce the pan system." The Mayor said the contractor should be allowed a little time to get things into working o»"der. The City Engineer reported that Cox's Creek bridge could be repaired, but at the end of twelve months a new culvert would require to be considered. The letter was received. A letter was read from Mr Steadman, notifying that he would hold the Council liable for any damage done his property by filling in done by the tramway works. The Mayor said the plans were duly advertised, and the levels fixed. The letter was received. The Auckland Tramways Company wrote asking for a plan of the line to be followed with the poles on Great North Road. Cr. Farrell said the Streets Committee considered the matter urgent, and replied In favour of iron poles. The action of the Streets Committee was approved. Cr. Booth drew attention to the damage done to roads and footpaths by overhanging trees. He moved, "That notice be given to offenders to trim back or remove such trees." The motion was agreed to. Accounts totalling £108 2/10 (general), and £128 (loan) were authorised to be paid. Water Supply.—Mr Fenton reported that the laying of the water pipes for the Richmond ward was completed. On the motion of Cr. Foster, the Engineer was instructed to report re laying water to houses in the Surrey and Sussex wards, not yet connected. Buchan Traps.—A deputation of residents attended the Council to protest against the Buchan trap required to be affixed to drains by property owners. Mr O'Connell, as spokesman, contended that ventilating shafts at the highest point of such small drains would do away with the necessity for each house having a Buchan trap. The Mayor said they learned it was the intention of the Health Department to insist upon every house in the district having that special trap. Therefore the Council had thought it advisable that the newly erected houses should be requested to start with Buchan traps. Mr Smith contended that every house now had the ordinary traps, and that Buchan traps in addition were an unnecessary expense. The Mayor quoted from the Health Act to show the power the Council had to see that everything connected with drainage was done properly. Mr O'Connell asked that the matter of using Buchan traps should in the meantime be left optional. The Mayor said he was prepared to submit the matter to the health officer for his report. This course was agreed to. Coronation Celebrations.—The Council decided to carry out the programme as arranged for the 26th of June, on Saturday, the 9th of August.
