There being a surplus of £2 from the fund raised by the Council officials to entertain Mr Knight at a smoke concert, the committee decided to hand that amount to the fund to assist Mrs Virtue, who was left with a family of eight children to provide for.
The necessity for keeping the asphalt pavement in Queen-street clean was illustrated about 2 o'clock this afternoon in front of the Strand Arcade. A heavily-laden cart had stopped for a moment, and when the horse tried to start ag; ain its feet slipped, and it all but fell. A 'bus was passing and upon reaching the same spot the leaders also nearly came to grief. While so much work is going on it is, of course, hardly possible to keep the asphalt clean, as carts are continually coming off the clay cuttings on the eastern side of the road.
