A FRENCH SENSATION
THE STORY OF AN EMPTY SAFE
PARIS, May 10,
A warrant has been issued for the arrest of M. Humbert, son of M. Humbert, who was a member of M. De Freycinet's Cabinet, together with his wife and his wife's sister, Marie Daurignac, who have all 'absconded. Madame Humbert borrowed two millions sterling on the strength of an alleged bequest for four millions, which was said to be locked in a safe. Neither Crawford, the alleged American testator, nor Newhewson, who was represented as being anxious to marry Marie, had ever seen the family. The creditors of Humbert becoming clamorous the justices opened the safe, which was found to be empty.
