THE PARNELL LOAN OF £15,000.

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —Before the people of Parnell make up their minds on this subject there are some points on which they need more light. (1) Did the Parnell Council know thai the street levels were to be so much altered, and did they agree to bear the cost of damage to property in consequence, or did they see to it that all claims for compensation were to be paid by the Tramway Company? (2) Did the Council know that the alteration of levels was to play such havoc with the road, or were they kept in the dark? Did the Engineer give them' full information? There is a strong impression abroad that tie Council has been completely had over the whole business. If the impression is mistaken, it is time the Council proved it to be so. Another matter may be mentioned here. It was the fond hope of many that the trams would help the borough immensely, but we are now. beginning to think it was a vain hope. Many a thriving country town has been killed by the railway passing through it, and it will be found the trams will carry people, not to Parnell, but past it, to suburbs where land can be had at cheaper rates. Surely it is a pity that bur roads should be spoiled, our debt increased, and our rates raised, and all to benefit Epsom and Remuera. At least many people think so.—l am, etc,
