COUNTRY NEWS. WAifiL (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WAIHI, this day. A strong outburst of feeling has been shown here during the past week concerning the appointment of borough engineer at the first meeting of the Council, without calling for applications and giving others the opportunity of applying for the position. Some ratepayers urge that the Councillors and Mayor who voted for the appointment have broken faith with them, having promised, it is alleged,- that they would not countenance the instant appointments of any officials under the Borough. The appointment was only made on the casting vote of the Mayor. So great is the feeling now that two gentlemen have been requisitioned ib stand for the Mayoralty at the election taking place oft the 30th inst. It is not probable, however, that any candidates will be forthcoming to contest the election against Mr W. H. Phillips, the present Mayor. PAEROA. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) PAEROA, this day. The* weather was beautifully fine, and the children and parents rolled up in great numbers and appeared to thoroughly enjoy themselves. The committee of ladies deserve great credit for the excellent arrangements made, anfi they were ably assisted by the whole staff of teachers. The Coaching Company and others who gave coaches and all sorts oi conveyances free to convey children tc and fro also deserve thanks.
